From the beginning, BioEnterprise has had an important seat at the table, helping us to develop our strategic plan, vision and outlook on what our business could be,” said Sara Ann MacKinlay. “And they have been a great sounding board and connector to clinical leadership in Northeast Ohio.”

Sara Ann MacKinlay is General Manager of Exsurco Medical, a medical device manufacturer of high precision products for tissue banks and healthcare professionals. The company was spun out of Bettcher Industries, a market leader in patented precision cutting and trimming tools for food processing and industrial manufacturing.  In 2008, Bettcher leadership began exploring potential applications for their technology in the medical marketplace. BioEnterprise provided strategic counsel to Bettcher, providing access to non-dilutive funding sources, and expertise in early-stage business formation and marketing in the healthcare space. Paul Pirozzola, VP of Marketing of Bettcher Industries relied on the BioEnterprise network to open doors and facilitate introductions to local subject matter experts.

Over the next three years, Bettcher researched, developed and launched products for tissue banks and tissue processors across North America. The company hired experienced professionals who understood tissue bank customers. Building on this infrastructure, Bettcher formed Exsurco Medical, a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2011, to develop and commercialize advanced devices for the recovery and processing of cadaveric tissue for lifesaving skin grafts.

To help build its team, Exsurco Medical hired Sara Ann MacKinlay as General Manager in 2014. With more than 25 years’ experience as a healthcare executive for companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Invacare and Smith & Nephew, MacKinlay assembled a team of 17 professionals with expertise in key facets of medical device manufacturing, including engineering, quality regulatory affairs and marketing and sales.  Throughout the company’s evolution, BioEnterprise played a critical role. “From the beginning, BioEnterprise has had an important seat at the table, helping us to develop our strategic plan, vision and outlook on what our business could be,” said Sara Ann MacKinlay. “And they have been a great sounding board and connector to clinical leadership in Northeast Ohio.”

In 2015, Exsurco Medical moved into its own production facility, a standalone space with a Class 7 cleanroom for assembling and packaging in Wakeman, OH. Exsurco Medical also is registered with the FDA and is ISO 13485:2016 certified.
Exsurco Medical’s mission is to advance incision science to improve the lives of patients in need of the healing power of skin. In 2017, the company launched a new wound debridement and skin grafting medical device, the “Amalgatome SD” for use in burn and trauma centers. The product is currently in use in burn centers across the United States.
